Photos: Great Sand Dunes National Park

June 19th, 2005

On our way from Pagosa Springs to Lakin we stopped at the sand dunes in Colorado, near Alamosa. I remember having visited these when I was very very young. This is the location of the tallest dunes in all of North America, 750 feet tall. Over 30 square miles of dunes, their location against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains keeps the sand from blowing away.

Here you can see the dunes, bordered by Medano Creek, which spreads way out while it passes through the sand.

Mom, the dunes, and the mountains. It was pretty warm on the dunes, in the 90's. Kinda neat to be in such warm temperatures and see snow on a mountaintop not far away.

Small little clouds over the mountains, near the entrance to the park.

A park raner explaining about a mammoth touth found near the park. Its a great environment to be able to teach, lots of kids around and nobody particularly has anything to do. It was neat to see all the kids gathered around him, and all the parents behind them, all listening intently.

Reminds me of something from Star Wars.
