2003.12.11 @ 00:07:02 Ups and Downs

So, if you have not noticed in the past two days that Typhoon has not been the most accessible, well, you haven't been visiting very often which probably means you're leading a fairly healthy life and not addicted to computing too much. In the event that you did notice the downtime, then, um, well, you're one of the lucky few... yeah. Anyway, here's the deal.

Right before Thanksgiving our whole home network went haywire. I bought a new linksys router, and replaced my trusty 10-bit hub for the going hay-wire hub. That *seemed* to fix everything, but alas, there were still some unobvious problems. Al was noticing latency, particularly with IM and some websites. So, we pulled out the router, and plugged in Al's old router (whose wireless is crap, which is why we weren't using it), and used it solely for routing. Well, that required a change of IPs, so DNS had to propegate. But, that router, well, it sucks. It crashed in the middle of the night, completely froze up. A reboot in the morning fixed it, and it crashed again before I got home from work. Latency was much more accomidating than this crashing, in my opinion. So I switched it back, causing yet another IP change, and waiting for DNS to propegate. I then applied a new Firmware version, which so far, seems to have fixed the latency issues. So, everything should be running smooth as silk now. Despite the network issues, I'd like to humbly boast that Debian rules, and Typhoon itself has not had any lockups, freezeups, or had any software bugs that has caused it to be inaccessible. Horray for software that works, and works damn well. I wish my desktop could do that.
