The following message is a Public Service Announcement brought to you by the letters A and H:
Many people are not aware that vehicle headlights (sometimes referred to as headlamps) are adjustable. Up, Down, Left, Right... every direction you'd ever want. While the method of adjustment varies, nearly all vehicles have the capability to adjust. A notable few vehicles have a self-adjusting feature, but if you have this kind of car you're probably too rich to be reading this announcement.
So you may be asking yourself, "Why would I need to adjust my headlights?" There are two primary reasons. The first, so that you, the driver, can see things. Its common sense that a well aimed light helps you to see what you're looking at. Usually, you're looking at the road in front of you, so this is where the headlight should be focused. The second, and equally important reasons, is so that other people can see things. If your headlights are improperly aimed, other drivers will likely be blinded.
For example, let's assume the headlights are improperly aimed too high. This will result in the driver not being able to see the road, as the light won't ever land on the road. It will also result in the blinding of drivers coming from the opposite direction, as well as drivers (particularly in low to the ground vehicles, such as a mini cooper) in front of you, resulting in a dangerous situation for all people in the vicinity. This problem plagues large trucks and SUVs, which are already high off the ground to start with. With these vehicles, proper headlight aiming is critical.
Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual, or a quick internet search on "aim headlights" will yeild information on proper methods for aiming.
