Not that anybody except for maybe Tim would care, but I just finished updating the Typhoon's happy fun kernel to 2.4.18 from 2.2.22. There were simply too many two's in the previous version. Nobody should notice any difference at all. No new functionality or anything like that.
So why would I bother spending an hour and a half or so to do this you ask? Well, I was looking at a 180 GB hard drive to put into the server. This size hard drive would require a new controller card to run it. The controller card definitly won't work under the old version, and I'm trying to figure out if it will work at all in Linux... apparently there's some controversy about it.
Why the bigger drive? Two reasons. First, its a much quieter drive, and I can cut back to only one hard drive - 180gb ought to be enough :). I'm on a quietness kick, and replacing that and then the fan on the CPU is next - need to find a good deal on Panaflo 60mm fans (nice and quiet). After that, the server will be much less obtrusive. The second reason is I want to be able to store all my files on the server... that is, pictures, music, movies, etc. This way I can access the files from either my laptop or desktop, whichever I happen to be using. It also allows for regular backups between the server and my desktop - backing up ones files is *very* good.
So, clearly I'm mostly settled now. Sure, not everything is "just so", but it's close enough to be workable for now. Tomorrow is cleaning day back at the apartment, and perhaps Wednesday too if I don't quite get it all done. In more exciting news, I got a call from a potential buyer for my prelude today, and he's very interested... he's taking it to a mechanic tomorrow to have it checked out... I'm lowering the price considerably for him since the A/C still needs work, and I'm ready to get it off my hands. Here's hoping everything works out well...
I apologize for the general nerdiness of this post, but thats just the way it goes since I'm a nerd.
