I think this can apply to visual art as well (I guess that's kind of obvious though... especially with abstract art I guess.) At least in my personal experience I know I can make several random associations to make something simple symbolize something overly complex. (Useful for arguing with evil AP English teachers to raise your grade.) Then again who is to say what is simple and complex.
But nevertheless I guess that's why I had a love/hate relationship with my art critism class... why is some piece generally accepted as "good" or "bad" when one can interpret it however you desire. (Or maybe I'm bitter that some people get paid just to voice their opinion.)
This turned out to be more "me" based than I would have liked, but I guess it goes to show that interpretation is biased by personal experiences. Oh well.
