It's almost that day again. The 3rd day before the first sunday after the Paschal Full Moon for the year. More commonly known as Good Friday. This day can be very confusing, even for Christians. The cruicifiction of Jesus - "one of the most obscene means of torture known to man" is how they just described it on the radio show that I'm listening to. But what is the day for, why do we set it aside, why is it marked on the calendar?
What is the day for, is it for celebration and joy, or a day of sadness and remorse. Or is it simply a day of reflection, and looking forward to easter? Or perhaps it's just a Friday that means it's almost the weekend. I personally think it's a day of reflection, as the disciples were reflecting upon Jesus life as things finally fit together, as well as sadness because we realized *our* shortcomings resulted in this torture. What are your thoughts on the matter?
In a short aside, went to organ stop pizza today as Jason & Danielle hadn't been. It was good times, although very patriotic songs given the older crowd there. Not as fun as sometimes. Tomorrow is meeting day at work, I have 3 of them scheduled which is very unuusal for me. After work is worship practice then good friday tenebrae service - probably one of my favorite church services all year long.
i preface this with "i think" to clarify that it's my opinion, not theology or anything official.
i think that good friday is like any other day for the christian in our inability to define it. every day in this life is a struggle between guilt and remorse (then repentance) and joy and thanksgiving (after forgiveness). like any emotional rollercoaster, there are times when this fluctuation of sinner and saint is not so obvious, and there are times when you feel like your stomach has taken a vacation south. who you are on any given good friday, where your faith is, and how God chooses to let His Word work in you - that determines how you will take this day of reflection.
that said, i awoke to the first cloudy and somber day in sioux falls for awhile... so maybe sometimes the weather plays a part, too...
Interesting aside...
So I wore all black to work today, partly because I think it's a cool tradition, and partly because I think it is a good way to start a conversation. Only one preson made a comment, Danielle, who appropriately said something on the order of "Why are you wearing all black, did somebody die?"
