2005.02.01 @ 02:23:20 Typhoon update

A short (approx 1 hour) outage tonight (or yesterday to be accurate), I swapped hard drives in Typhoon with Tsunami, which also meant swapping IDE controllers. I moved the gigabit card back to Typhoon too, not that anyone but me would ever notice. Tomorrow I'll grab the new kernel, as its getting late here. The current plan is to move Tsunami to the living room for TV purposes, at least for the forseeable future - until I work out a more elegant solution.

In further update news... the latest kernel is now loaded. The next thing for the round of updates is to update all of the packages, but that could be fairly major if things happen to break so probably a weekend project just in case. Horray for finally getting things up to date again! Tsunami is well on its way to being ready for a HTPC (home theater computer) role. Windoze is installed and updated (i'm not sure if there's linux drivers for the tuner card - and just want it working for now). I still need to put the tuner in and get that all loaded up, but i'm making progress at least!

Was Tsunami so named before the recent tragedy? Knowing you, and your penchant for coordinating names, I would guess so.

Why yes, "on", Tsunami was so named about a year ago, well prior to the recent tsunami. It is the newest name for my computers. The others, in order of age of name (the name tends to stay with the task moreso than the actual physical computer): Tornado - my desktop, Typhoon - this server, and Thunder, my laptop. Tsunami has taken on a number of roles, from "backup server" to home file server, and now will be a htpc (home theater). This is mostly because I can't really think of another weather related T word.

I think I like Turbulence the best. Tidal isn't bad, as it fits the "destructive" nature of the other names too.
