2006.11.08 @ 00:30:18 Voting, & How to Kill X

First, the good news:

  • I voted
  • X is working again

Ok, so starting with X. Backgronud: Ubuntu doesn't supply SMP kernels, so I had to compile my own kernel. Also, the built-in nvidia driver doesn't support dual monitors in X. So, I had to download the binary nvidia provided driver. Apparently, this driver has 2 parts - one that goes into the Kernel (as a module of course), and one that goes with X. These two versions must be kept in sync, or things won't work. So I did an upgrade yesterday, not paying attention to what was being updated... well, they udpated the X driver, but they didn't povide me with the updated source to compile the new kernel source.... So after putzing around, i downgraded the X driver and all is happy again, for now.

Voting... well, that wasn't too big a deal, just the most propositions of any state in the nation, a lot of them stupid, and unfortunatly some of the stupid ones seem to be winning. In particular, the two I'm most upset about are Prop 202 and 204. I'm sure details could be found if you're curious. Otherwise, I'm not too upset with the results one way or the other.

Most unfortunately, the minimum wage increases passed in several states by wide margins. On the plus side, at least AZ didn't become a laughingstock with an election lottery.

Yes, I was probably the happiest to see that one fail miserably. I do want to find those people who voted for it and ask them what they were thinking. Wait, scratch that, I really don't want to know.
