Another major election is over. People are talking about how historic it is, etc. etc. But one thing I wonder is this: when are we going to revamp the election process? I'd much rather have a system similar to that of Nebraska or Maine, where the congressional districts actually matter. As it shows right now, Obama has 68% of the electoral votes, but only 51% of the popular vote. There have been 3 elections in the history of the USA where the elected president didn't win the popular vote. I'm not sure if we're ready to do away with the electoral college and moving to a strict popular vote, there is a reason it exists. I'm just saying, it sucks how unrepresentative the electoral college can be.
Apparently the New York Times agrees with you (imagine that!): http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/20/opinion/20thu1.html?ref=opinion
I for one like the electoral college. Most people don't know what it does, but it keeps us under a two party system for one thing. I would hate to be like Germany with eight political parties, changing all of the time!
True, there are problems with having so many political parties too... but as it is, I think people feel their votes are 'wasted'. You can even see this in how the candidates campaign - they focus all of their attention on "battleground states", as if the other states simply don't matter. Strategically, of course, this is brilliant... but it doesn't do a whole lot for empowering the people.
