2003.12.03 @ 19:56:12 Journalism, and lack of thinking - another look

This post is relating to the previous post entitled Journalism and lack of thinking. In it, I was critiquing a very poorly written article by CNN relating to faster driving causing more deaths. As I stated, they did a really good job at publishing spoon-fed data without turning their brains on for half a second to analyze the data.

Thanks to Dan, who sent me an article which I believe to exhibit much better journalism skills, entitled Untrue at Any Speed: Slow limits make road kill written by Steven Moore at National Review. This article, contrary to the CNN article, provides actual thought behind the facts, and explains causes behind the data provided. The conclusion of this article is exactly opposite: Raising the speed limits on US highways increased highway safety - both in terms of fatality rate and injury rate. The reasons why? better cars, people driving a more consistent speed, people paying attention to their driving instead of watching for police. The only real weak point of this article is that he explains away the other studies simply by stating that they manipulated the data for it to say what they wanted. I could use a little more explaination on that, but so be it.

There you have it.
