2006.12.13 @ 18:53:16 School Bus Routes

I was reminded this morning of another reason why I generally don't get into work very early. While driving down a major 1-miler road, 3 lanes each way, I approach an intersection with another major 1-miler road. However, just before the intersection (which of course has another 2 lanes for left turns) is a school bus sitting in the right hand lane with the lights flashing and the tiny little stop sign out (which of course nobody but the first car in the line could see). I stop. The stoplight at the intersection ahead turns green. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. I wait. The stoplight turns red. I wait. Finally, all the children are deemed to be safely on the bus and the lights shut off. Now maybe its just me, but this really doesn't seem like a safe situation. I see two major issues: the first, blocking traffic flow... the streets are already clogged enough. The second, safety. Keep in mind that this is during *rush hour*, and this 40mph road quite often has 3 full lanes of traffic moving at speeds around 50mph. To come upon a blob of stoppedness when it is not expected can be rather dangerous. So why don't we put those school bus stops in some less dangerous less inconveniencing locations, like the neighborhood streets where the kids actually live, instead of at the entrance to the alley behind the 7-11. Seriously.
