2003.03.30 @ 03:19:46 Birthday or something

Today is my birthday. Makes me wonder why we celebrate birthdays, not that I mind having a bunch of people around just to hang out and chat. It's just one of the many things where we as humans have to make an event out of something to draw lots of attention to something or someone because we tend to neglect them the rest of the time. Sorta like upping the average one time instead of giving constant effort. No, no, I don't feel like I'm neglected, just a general observation.

Maybe I'm just getting old, and that's how you look at your birthdays then.

At least there's other people who are older than me.

As mentioned in the last entry, I went to the Switchfoot concert. So, naturally I've been listening to some of their music. Their first album, which I don't think they played any songs from during the concert has caught my interest. It's a very dark album, dealing with depressive... potentially suicidal thoughts. Here's an example:

"With blankness staring back at me
And gleaming from the pages
I feel the fear of apathy
Gripping me, pushing me on top of everything
In the corner with a view
I turn off the fluorescent tubes"
- Bomb by Switchfoot

Anywhere, I guess I always sorta liked dark music. My favorite from the album, and potentially my favorite by Switchfoot is the song "Might Have Ben Hur." It's very musically simple, very strong vocals. For me that's odd, usually I like a song becuase of the music not the lyrics. In fact, it probably has the clearest vocals of any of this album's songs. Go figure. Some of the other lyrics are definitly more reassuring, although there's definitly not much in terms of happiness. For example the song "You" talks about how our hope/faith/etc. is not in ourselves but in God our creator.
